LIBE 477 - Reading Review #1
TL Captain's Blog. Stardate: 2020.261.
After much thought, I decided that want to focus on reference instruction (bibliographic instruction) to support student's information literacy skills and the information inquiry process. I don't feel confident teaching the research/inquiry process. From previous courses, I am familiar with various models of the inquiry/research process, but I don't feel confident in what bibliographic instruction each stage should include, what the information inquiry process should look like (real life examples please!!!), how to assess the practiced/gained information literacy skills, and introducing the newest apps and technologies for final presentations.
These areas rely heavily on digital technologies spanning the online catalogue to find books, online databases, web searches and websites, the use of Google Drive or other word processing software to gather information and record their bibliography, and whatever presentation technology/app they choose to utilize for the final piece of their research. I feel confident in teaching the use of Google Drive/word processing, saving and printing documents, and using the online catalogue to locate books in the library, as well as introducing the usual types of presentation technologies, but I would like to put together comprehensive multimodal lessons that cover bibliographic instruction (i.e. wondering and asking good questions, refining topics, web searches, website bias, credible sources, search rankings, bibliographies, and taking notes to name a few.) Not to mention exploring the new and exciting applications/technologies available for final presentations of the gathered information.
Bibliographic instruction, information literacy skills, and the information inquiry process support the ADST curriculum for grades 6-8 in content areas such as copyright, ethical use of information, search techniques, and how to evaluate search results, and, depending on the topic, it also supports many of the curricular competencies for science and social studies across the grades. However, it really covers the core competencies of Communication, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Personal Awareness and Responsibility, and Social Responsibility.
I would like to explore bibliographic instruction, information literacy skills, and the information inquiry process for grades 8-10, as I hope to be a TL in a high school some day, although much of what I put together will be usable as a framework for grades 6-10.

This is a good first post! You have a strong focus for further reading and research. You are engaging in important work and I think we will all benefit from your learning. Your blog layout and format are very engaging. I love the theme and the bitmojis. For your next post you may want to include some multimedia elements such as images, links, or videos. These add another layer to your post and further enhance the reading experience for your audience.
ReplyDeleteThanks Darcy! I will be sure to add some multimedia for my next post. Glad you like the theme, I always have so much fun playing around and tweaking things. Hope you didn't get too lost... I'm taking 5 courses and 3 of them share this blog, let me know if that becomes a problem and I can split them off.
DeleteThe navigation might become a little tricky for your classmates when we move into small groups and they have to start commenting on your posts. If you decide to make a change please let me know.
